Do not push hard with the cleaning cloth as this has cleaners embedded in the cloth and that will shine the piece. If you neglect your piece and let it turn black due to oil/chemical/water exposure, it’s gone too far and needs professional restoration. This means even if you clean it with the cloth, the gold plating is gone, this is why caring for it means following the preventive recommendations. The blue cleaning cloth will remove new tarnish but it won’t add more gold back to your piece. Gold coated items need extra care and can last a lifetime if maintained well by preventing tarnish and treating it as soon as it appears. To maintain it you want to preserve the protective gold plating from the for-mentioned things. Some people use clear nail polish to protect gold plated jewelry and that can protect an item for up to three months.
