Returns the phone to the parents
We gave this tablet as a birthday present for our 1 year old. We like to download Netflix and some kid shows for road trips. as the kids get older they like to play games on the tablet. what’s great is you can get amazon kids for free for a year which applies to the family so all of your kids can enjoy the apps and materials that are included with amazon kids+. I like that the case is thick and durable. We have 3 of these tablets and haven’t needed to use the replacement program yet. They are built great and withstand the hands of toddlers. The battery life is fantastic! Get this tablet if you are tired of giving your kids your phone to entertain them!

Incredibly useless tablet
When creating a product geared toward children, even if it’s only a colorful cover on an existing product, said product should at least be somewhat easy to use or, dare I say, functional. Not so for the Fire HD 8 Kids Tablet.First of all, I’ve been a user of Amazon products for as long as I can remember. My home is filled with Alexa and Fire products. One of the main issues with Amazon products is, despite having options to carry your preferences and settings over to each new product, that doesn’t ever really happen. Every product requires 80% setup every time. I mention this because, while this tablet is “geared” toward children in the sense there are options for Disney/colorful skins, backgrounds, cases, Amazon Kids, and kid-related apps, it’s really just a Kindle Fire 8 that you’re setting up with your information. Once you go through the setup process (that should have already been transferred over from your account but wasn’t), which includes downloaded content, etc., you’ll log in as your child and, what I would describe as “re-download” the same content on your account under the kids account. It’s a really convoluted process that makes little sense. Depending on your settings under the kids account, you’ll have to switch profiles EVERY time you want to download an app or make ANY changes whatsoever. Anyway, on to the actual review…Let’s start with the positives:1. Generally, it looks like a tabletOk, now that we’ve covered that…on to the issues:1. This tablet is SLOW.Like, a 1999 CyberPower PC attempting to run Microsoft Flight Simulator, slow. It doesn’t matter what you attempt to do on this tablet, expect 7-10 business days to complete it.2. While, from a business perspective, I can understand Amazon forcing users into downloading everything from their app store…their app store is garbage. Half of the apps you (or your kids) want simply don’t exist in the Amazon store. For the ones that do exist…you’ve got a 50/50 shot they’ll even download. Which leads me to…3. Downloads. Not only do you have to download anything you want your kids to be able to use, twice, the download process is terrible. Even if your app downloads the first time (rare), you’ll still have to go through a process to get it someplace visible for your kid to use it.Also…there’s no physical download manager you can find to verify download status. You’ll get a series of notifications (maybe) if a download fails for whatever reason. But don’t think that notification allows you to fix the problem. While it might show you what apps failed to download and give you 2 options…”Restart Download” or “Cancel”…it’s highly likely those buttons won’t do anything. They’ll close the notification, sure. But there is no restart. There is no cancel. Just an endless loop of you opening notifications and selecting useless options. Also…if an app you’re attempting to download to your kids profile doesn’t download? You’ll see the spinning circle of death on the app icon, but no way to see if it’s in a queue, pending, failed…it just spins. For-ev-er.4. Did I mention the tablet is slow? Now, having grown up with Commodore64, Apple II, and the original Pentium chip, I can think back to a time where slow was just…accepted…because that was the technology of the time. It’s 2024. This particular version of Fire tablet, while not the 2024 version, is relatively new in a technological sense. Taking over 2 minutes to open a simple drawing app is…unacceptable. Is it the app itself? Could be. But it takes forever for nearly all apps to load. It takes forever for the settings to load. Something as simple as switching profiles (which, again, you may have to do frequently) takes over 30 seconds…and that’s just the switch. The home page loading in under 30 seconds? Good luck. The original build and setup of the tablet was so slow, I figured maybe Amazon had too much garbage loaded on it, so I went a removed some apps.No change. The Amazon Kids profile was so slow I figured if I deactivated it and just set parental controls for the rest of the things, it might help.Nope.This thing is running barebones, stripped down, nothing going in the background…still garbage.I thought maybe it was a one-off. Maybe this tablet was just a lemon. The problem with that? I ordered 2 of these at the same time.Same product.Same setup.Same garbage.I’m not a big review person. If the product works the way it should, great. If it doesn’t, I’ll get something else.Unfortunately, this product is such trash, I couldn’t stand by and watch someone purchase it without letting them know what they’re in for.Maybe the new version is better? If it’s based on this platform, not likely.

Great for 4 year old
He loves his tablet but I noticed it lags sometimes! Like it’s buffering. It didn’t just start but I’ve been so busy with work and also 3 deaths back to back. I had to take a major part in planning all 3. I m not asking for pity or using excuses but I hope I’m still in my return/Exchange window. He loves the learning games and has so much fun on it! But I thought a better processor meant it wouldn’t lag more than a smaller processing system. The charger came with doesn’t even charge. It hasn’t from the start, but I’ve had another charger and it worked perfectly fine so we used that. Another thing I should have contacted immediately about so I understand it’s my fault! Hopefully Amazon will help still!!

Great
My kiddo loves this thing. Came preloaded with a lot of good programs for her. She’s been rough with it and it holds up to the abuse. Easy to use and great parental controls. Disney + works flawlessly with it. The case is thick and does a great job.

Good for price
This is an updated review from a few weeks ago.I’d say this tablet is pretty fast and is great for the price. It’s not as fast as a some other brands, but it’s also significantly cheaper. It started out very fast, but slowed quite a bit once my kid downloaded just a few simple games from the Amazon Kids app. I submitted a review that was 3 stars (initial review below), and Amazon customer service reached out to me within 1-2 days! They suggested I update it (it’s crazy that it needed an update already, since we had just got it), which did significantly speed up operations. So, if you frequently update it and reset it (by holding down the power button until the unit shuts down) then it will operate reasonably fast when using the Amazon kids app, but will be very glitchy and slow if you don’t. After this latest update, I am even more convinced that the tablet itself is pretty good, but when using the Amazon app, it slows down. I have another Amazon tablet that’s a few years old and the Amazon kids app slows it down, as well, but hasn’t yet caused the freezing and other glitches that I have experienced with this tablet. All in all – I’d buy this one again. Is it the perfect tablet and the one I’d prefer to have? No. But I’m not going to pay 3-7x the price for a faster brand (at least not for my kid) ;-).***My initial review: It started incredibly fast, but it very quickly slowed down as soon as a few low data games, etc were downloaded. It is very glitchy and freezes frequently. It could be that it’s the Amazon Kids app and not the tablet itself, but my guess is it’s a mix of both being subpar. I bought it during prime day, so I’d say for that price it’s still worth it for a 5 -6 year old who isn’t super tech savvy. But for any older kid familiar with technology, this would probabe too slow. I don’t think I’d pay full price for it.

Great parental control
I got this tablet for my 3yr old daughter and I’m in love with it! The picture quality is great. The set up is very easy and the tablet walks you through the set up process. I love the preloaded games as they are perfect for learning and playing along. This tablet comes with a charging USB to USB c cord and a charging cube. The screen is big, you can adjust the font size and the screen moves with the your first touch (so no more getting angry for the screen not recognizing your touch). The best thing about this tablet though is the amazing parental controls. I can set a timer for screen use and permission is sent to the parent account before downloading unauthorized content. There is so much more but I am still learning all the features and the amazon kids + makes no wifi areas even more enjoyable. Can’t go wrong with this tablet, great buy.

UPDATED REVIEW: 1-star to 3-star
2nd UPDATE: I had to change my rating to 5 stars because the tablet has been great since my last review update. No complaints at all. The sound quality isn’t exceptional but for a little kid, it’s more than good enough. It’s easy for a parent to switch back and forth between kids and adult modes, which is nice. I would recommend to anyone else who buys this not to test it out until it’s charged and has had a few hours to update or “warm up,” if you will. I’m overall happy with the purchase.UPDATE: After charging the tablet to above 15%, it seems to be working much better. Apps will now load and I am able to download videos. Screen resolution is actually better than expected. I’ve decided to give this tablet a chance for a couple days before returning it. I changed my rating from 1 star to 3 due to the fact it was initially extremely slow and unresponsive, which can lead many more people into thinking it’s just not going to work. If it craps out again, I’ll update my review accordingly.(Initial review)* I took a chance on this tablet after reading the reviews, thinking perhaps the people who left negative reviews just didn’t know what they were doing. Turns out they were all right….this tablet is crap. It’s incredibly slow and the apps don’t respond when you try to open them or download a game/video. I’m sending it back today. Save yourself the same hassle and just buy an android tablet.

Great entertainment for the kiddo w/ parental controls that are easy to setup
I like that it comes with their apps and parental controls already on it. The first couple of hours the tablet runs slow but that’s only because it is setting up and downloading all the kids apps that you select during the setup process. It has great kids learning apps already on the home screen so you don’t have to spend all day searching for the right ones. It’s size is perfect for my 4 year old toddler and it is light weight with a durable foam cover to withstand the storm that can be my daughter. It has a good screen dimmer for night time so it won’t hurt her eyes so overall you cannot find a better product for the price.
